The
Adaptive Behavior Evaluation Scale-Third Edition (
ABES-3) provides a measure of adaptive behaviors necessary for success in the educational and residential settings that are not measured by academic skills testing. The
ABES-3 meets the need for an adaptive behavior rating scale which relies on direct behavioral observations by educators and parents/guardians in educational and residential settings. The
ABES-3 is used as a measure of adaptive skills in the identification of intellectually disabled, behaviorally disordered, learning disabled; and visually, hearing, or physically impaired students. The
ABES-3 assesses 10 areas of adaptive skills grouped under the three adaptive behavior domains defined in the 10th AAMR Definition of Mental Retardation (AAMR, 2002): Conceptual, Social, and Practical Skills.
The technical manuals include data on internal consistency, test-retest and inter-rater reliability; item and factor analysis; and content, criterion-related, diagnostic, and construct validity.
Characteristics and Components of the ABES-3
- The ABES-3 is based on the definition of adaptive skills adopted by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAID, 2010).
- Factor analysis confirmed the three ABES-3 domains.
- The ABES-3: 13-18 SV was standardized on 672 students ages 13 through 18 years old.
- The ABES-3: 13-18 HV was standardized on 389 students ages 13 through 18 years old.
- The standardization population included students from 17 states, represented all geographic regions of the United States, and closely approximated the 2010 demographic characteristics of the United States.
- The ABES-3 provides norms based on gender and age.
- Internal consistency, item and factor analysis, standard errors of measurement, and test-retest reliability are reported.
- The ABES-3: 13-18 School Version can be completed in approximately 20 minutes and includes 103 items easily observed and documented by educational personnel.
- The ABES-3: 13-18 Home Version can be completed by a parent/guardian in approximately 20 minutes and includes 103 items representing behaviors exhibited in and around the home environment.
- The Adaptive Behavior Intervention Manual: 13-18 Years (© 2006) includes IEP goals, objectives, and interventions for all 103 items on the School Version of the scale.
- The ABES-3: 13-18 Quick Score computer program converts raw scores to standard scores and percentiles which makes scoring efficient and convenient.
The Adaptive Behavior Evaluation Scale-Third Edition Quick Score converts raw scores to standard scores and percentiles which makes scoring efficient and convenient.
