Ages 5-18

The Emotional and Behavior Problem Scale-Second Edition: Renormed (EBPS-2:R) School and Home Versions were developed to aid in diagnosis, placement, and planning for emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered children and youth from 5 through 18 years of age. Two interpretations of the items on the scale are provided. The Theoretical Interpretation is based on the federal definition of emotional disturbance (IDEA). Each subscale is associated with one of the five characteristics of emotional disturbance contained in the federal definition.

The EBPS-2:R Theoretical Interpretation subscales are

  • Learning Problems,
  • Interpersonal Relations,
  • Inappropriate Behavior,
  • Unhappiness/Depression, and
  • Physical Symptoms/Fears.

The Empirical Interpretation of the items on the scale represents a factor analysis clustering of the items into five disorders and represents a clinical perception of the items included on the scale. Each subscale is associated with one of the disorders.

The EBPS-2:R Empirical Interpretation subscales are

  • Social Aggression/Conduct Disorder,
  • Social-Emotional Withdrawal/Depression,
  • Learning/Comprehension Disorder,
  • Avoidance/Unresponsiveness, and
  • Aggressive/Self-Destructive.

Items are clear, concise, and written for teachers to use in documenting student behavior problems. Pre-referral and screening will be served by this scale and diagnosis will be facilitated by the observational ratings of teachers and other educators who complete the rating forms. Internal consistency, test-retest, and inter-rater reliability; item and factor analysis; and content, criterion-related, diagnostic, and construct validity are documented and reported for the scale.

The EBPS-2:R provides information to school psychologists, diagnosticians, and guidance counselors to use in making diagnostic decisions about appropriate placement and services for students with emotional and behavioral problems.

Characteristics and Components of the EBPS-2:R

  • The EBPS-2:R is based on the IDEA definition of emotional disturbance and factor analysis clustering of the scale items.

  • The EBPS-2:R School Version was standardized on a total of 1,715 students.

  • The standardization population included students from 18 states and represented all geographic regions of the United States.

  • The EBPS-2:R School and Home Versions provide separate norms for male and female students 5 through 18 years of age.

  • The EBPS-2:R School and Home Versions can be completed in approximately 15 minutes and includes 58 items easily observed and documented by educational personnel and the parent/guardian.

  • The Emotional and Behavior Problem Scale IEP and Intervention Manual includes IEP goals, objectives, and interventions for all 58 items on the scale.

  • The EBPS-2:R Quick Score computer program converts raw scores to standard scores and percentiles which makes scoring efficient and convenient.

Educational Planning

The Emotional and Behavior Problem Scale IEP and Intervention Manual (167 pages, © 1989) links behavioral assessment and intervention by providing goals, objectives, and an average of 33 interventions for each behavior problem. By carefully following assessment results with intervention, student success in the educational environment is maximized.

The Emotional and Behavior Problem Scale-Second Edition: Renormed Quick Score computer program converts raw scores to standard scores and percentiles which makes scoring efficient and convenient.
